SunSmart Schools

The SunSmart Schools Accreditation Programme promotes sun protection policies and practices in schools to reduce children’s exposure to UV radiation and their risk of skin cancer.

The Cancer Society provides support to schools and helps them become SunSmart Accredited by working with them to develop and implement sun protection policies and practices.

All New Zealand primary and intermediate schools can apply to become SunSmart Accredited.

A SunSmart message from the children of Howick Intermediate School

The following link shows a clip on youtube that has been created by a group of 7 students from Howick Intermediate School. The children created the song to encourage people to be SunSmart and Slip, Slop, Slap and Wrap.

The SunSmart Learning Programme

The SunSmart Learning Programme guides students' learning and behaviours to help them be sun safe and prevent them from getting sunburnt.

Unit plans and supporting resources are provided for Years 1 to 8. Teachers can select from the provided activities to build a learning programme suited to the needs of their students. The activities can be used to support the SunSmart Learning Programme or as independent learning activities.
