SunSmart Summer mass media campaign

The current mass media campaign focuses around the message 'never let your child get sunburnt'. The goal of this campaign is to motivate parents and caregivers to take steps to stop their children from getting sunburnt.

Evidence indicates children aged 8 to 12 years old are in a transitional period ie, taking more responsibility for themselves and forming their own opinions. Active parental involvement in matters such as sun protection often starts to decline through the ‘tweenie’ years. However, parents are still a key influence on 8 to 12 year olds’ behaviour and this campaign aims to encourage parents to continue to exercise this influence.

Key messages:

  • Parents should remain actively involved in sun protection for their 8 to 12 year old children.
  • Sunburn under the age of 20 is strongly linked to the development of melanoma later in life, regardless of skin type.
  • You can be SunSmart and still enjoy the New Zealand outdoors.
  • ‘Slip, Slop, Slap and Wrap’ reinforces the need for multiple strategies of sun protection.
